Peptides for Mature Skin: What They Are and How They Work

If you've started noticing that your skin feels drier, looks less firm, or shows fine lines more easily than it once did, you're seeing some of the natural changes that happen as skin matures.

One group of skincare ingredients you may hear a lot about is peptides. But what are peptides, and what can they realistically do for mature skin?

As a formulator of skincare for mature skin, I believe it's important to understand what you're putting on your skin rather than relying on promises of overnight transformation.

What Are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, including proteins that are important to the structure and appearance of our skin.

Different peptides are used in cosmetic formulations for different purposes. Depending on the particular peptide and formulation, they may be incorporated into products designed to support smoother-looking, firmer-looking and healthier-looking skin.

Peptides are especially interesting for mature-skin formulations because the appearance and behaviour of our skin changes as we age.

Why Does Mature Skin Need Different Care?

With age, skin naturally undergoes changes. It may become drier, thinner or less resilient, and fine lines and wrinkles can become more noticeable.

That doesn't mean mature skin needs aggressive treatment.

In my experience, mature skin benefits from a thoughtful routine that combines hydration, moisturization, sun protection and carefully selected active ingredients.

Peptides can be one part of that routine.

What Do Peptides Do in Skincare?

There isn't one single “peptide.” There are many different peptides used in cosmetics, and they don't all perform the same function.

You may encounter categories such as signal peptides, carrier peptides and neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides. Their mechanisms and the evidence supporting individual ingredients differ, which is why I prefer looking at the specific peptide and the complete formulation rather than simply choosing a product because the word “peptide” appears on the label.

Some cosmetic peptide formulations are designed to help improve the appearance of fine lines, smoothness and firmness with consistent use.

The important words here are consistent use. Skincare should not be expected to transform mature skin overnight.

Peptides Used in Shinsei Formulations

When formulating Shinsei products, I use combinations of cosmetic ingredients rather than expecting one ingredient to do everything.

Depending on the product, Shinsei formulations use peptides such as palmitoyl peptides, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate, alongside complementary ingredients selected for mature skin.

You may recognize some peptide technologies by names such as Matrixyl®, Argireline® or SYN®-AKE.

Each finished formula is more than its headline ingredient. The concentration, combination of ingredients, texture and way a product fits into a daily routine all matter.

Are Peptides the Same as Botox?

No.

You may sometimes see certain cosmetic peptides described online as “Botox alternatives” or “Botox-like.” I don't think that's a helpful way to set expectations.

A topical cosmetic product and an injectable medical treatment are very different things.

Peptide skincare should be evaluated for what it is: topical skincare intended to support the appearance and condition of the skin, not as a replacement for a medical procedure.

Peptides and Hydration Work Well Together

One mistake I often see is concentrating only on wrinkles while overlooking hydration.

Mature skin frequently needs both.

That's why I like combining peptide-focused skincare with ingredients that help support hydration and the skin barrier. A well-designed routine doesn't need to contain a huge number of products; the products simply need to work well together.

How to Use Peptides in a Mature-Skin Routine

A routine can be quite simple.

Morning: Cleanse gently, apply your appropriate serum or treatment, follow with moisturizer, and finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Evening: Cleanse, apply your peptide or other targeted serum, and follow with a moisturizer suited to your skin.

Always follow the directions for the individual products you use.

Consistency is generally more useful than constantly changing products or adding too many active ingredients at once.

How Long Does Peptide Sk

incare Take to Work?

Be cautious of skincare promising an instant transformation.

Hydrating ingredients can make skin feel and appear more comfortable relatively quickly, but changes in the appearance of fine lines, texture or firmness from a skincare routine generally require consistent use over time.

Individual results will also vary according to age, skin condition, routine, formulation and other factors.

My Approach to Formulating for Mature Skin

I created Shinsei Cosmetics because my own skin changed as I matured.

As a food scientist and cosmetic formulator, I wanted skincare that approached mature skin intelligently: effective ingredients, thoughtful combinations and pleasant formulas that I would actually want to use every day.

Shinsei products are made in small batches in Toronto, Canada, with a particular focus on the needs of mature skin.

My philosophy is simple: mature skin doesn't need unrealistic promises. It needs thoughtful care.
